Pag looks like nowhere else on the coast: a bare, stony, almost lunar landscape shaped by salt and by the Bora that blows straight down off the Velebit. The island is known for its cheese, its lace and its salt pans, and the bridge in the south connects it directly to the mainland. Wind and salt are the two things that age a house here fastest, especially shutters, railings and outdoor woodwork.

Bura and salt are a permanent theme on Pag. We check metalwork, fittings and outdoor installations for corrosion and add an inspection after storm events. Because of the dryness, the water supply also matters more here than elsewhere. Shade is the other thing that costs money here. Awnings, sails and parasols take the full force of the wind, and a torn sail in August is a guest complaint rather than a repair job. We check the fixings, and we take shade structures down when a blow is forecast instead of hoping they hold.
Out of season
Pag is the most wind-scoured island on this coast, and the salt that comes with the bura is the thing that ages a building here rather than cold. Metal fittings, hinges and rails corrode on a timescale owners from further north consistently underestimate. Outside the established villages there is often no mains water and no sewer, so cisterns, pumps and septic tanks need a winter check of their own. A cistern that has taken in surface water over the winter is not something to discover in June.
